Back pain may arise from muscle strain, changes in the intervertebral discs or other conditions. Not all back pain means a slipped disc. Assessment is based on the medical history and clinical examination, with further investigations when needed.

How Can Physiotherapy Help?
A plan may include education, gradual movement, strengthening, flexibility and movement-control exercises. The specialist selects what is suitable for the condition, avoiding exercises that cause an unusual increase in symptoms.
When Should You Seek Urgent Help?
Progressive leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the area between the thighs require urgent medical assessment.
Is Complete Rest Necessary?
Prolonged bed rest is not appropriate for most uncomplicated back pain. Maintaining tolerable activity and increasing it gradually is generally preferred, in line with medical advice.
