Austria to reopen its borders with the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary from 15 June.

Austria announced on Saturday that it would fully reopen its borders with its eastern neighbours, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, on 15 June. The move extended the easing of restrictions introduced to contain the coronavirus outbreak to the country’s eastern borders, after restrictions on its western borders had been eased earlier.
The announcement followed a coordinated move by Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein to lift travel restrictions between them completely from 15 June, while relaxing rules on who would be permitted to cross. Restrictions on crossings from Italy remained unchanged, according to a report on the British newspaper The Guardian’s website.
In a joint statement, Austria’s ministers for interior affairs, foreign affairs and European affairs said their goal was to allow as much freedom as possible while keeping restrictions to the minimum necessary.
The European Union had called the previous Wednesday for internal borders to reopen and travel to resume after closures introduced in March to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. However, it recommended that Europe’s external borders remain closed to most travel until at least mid-June.
